ORIHUELA: Situated in the south of the province of Alicante in the Region of Valencia (Spain), the town of Orihuela falls within the Vega Baja del Segura district. With 77,979 inhabitants as of 2006, Orihuela sits on the banks of the Segura River and the town centre is 23 metres above sea level.

Along with Torrevieja, Pilar de la Horadada and Guardamar del Segura, its coastal zone is a major tourist attraction.

Orihuela is the historic capital of the Vega Baja del Segura district and, with over 50,000 hectares, it is the largest irrigation zone in the province. The richness and fertility of its market gardens is due to the waters of the Segura River, but the very same river has also been responsible for several major floods (1651, 1879, 1946, 1973 and 1987). It was finally channelled in 1989, however, and has not broken its banks since.

As a result of its status as the former capital of the district, the municipal area of Orihuela boasts 23 kilometres of coastline with excellent beaches, coves and cliffs. These include Punta Prima, Playa Flamenca, Cabo Roig, La Zenia, Campoamor and Mil Palmera.

Its climate is Mediterranean/dry summer subtropical, with average temperatures of 18.5ºC. Winters here are mild, reaching highs of 16-18ºC and lows of only 5-10ºC.

Getting there

Orihuela is connected to the European road network by the A-7 motorway and the Alicante-Murcia highway (exits/salidas 80 and 81), and to the rest of Spain via the Madrid-Alicante highway.

Its rail connections are equally diverse, encompassing local, regional and mainline services.

Orihuela borders the municipal areas of Albatera, Algorfa, Almoradí, Benejúzar, Benferri, Bigastro, Callosa de Segura, Catral, Hondón de las Nieves, Hondón de los Frailes, Jacarilla, Redován, San Miguel de Salinas, Torrevieja and Pilar de la Horadada in the Region of Valencia, and Beniel, Murcia (districts) and Santomera in the Region of Murcia.
